This 8-day programme consists of four 2-day wānanga spread over a 4 month period.
The programme sessions are intended to stimulate learning, discussion, debate and, ultimately, action. Therefore, the sessions will utilise a wide range of teaching styles most responsive to programme content, interest and energy levels, prior knowledge base, and the learning models of participants.
Key themes and concepts explored in the programme include:

- Increase participants’ understanding of a broad number of ‘cutting edge’ leadership issues;
- Provide a safe, but challenging, environment for participants to explore issues related to Māori public health; and,
- Strengthen participants’ networks across the country by fostering support, mentoring, strategy sharing and retention of Māori staff in the public health sector.
Description
This 8-day programme consists of four 2-day wānanga spread over a 4 month period.

- Traditional and contemporary Māori leadership styles in a global setting;
- Reflecting on yourself as a leader;
- Contemporary public health issues;
- Understanding Māori self development and determination;
- Communication, facilitation and how to build influence and credibility;
- Developing and implementing projects;
- Tools and strategies for leaders, and
- Exploration of tikanga Māori and what makes us Māori.
A training folder will be provided which will include all pre-reading material for each session.
A project will also be undertaken outside the wānanga.
Participant Eligibility
For participants to be eligible for the programme, they shall be:
- Māori; and
- currently employed in an organisation that has a Public Health contract with Ministry of Health or District Health Board; and
- committed to positive health outcomes for Māori; and
- committed to attending all four noho Marae; and
- committed to completing the programme.
Costs
Most of the programme costs are covered, including:
- accommodation at the marae;
- meals during the wānanga; and,
- training resources.
The costs that you and your organisation need to cover include:
- your release time;
- your travel to attend the programme; and,
- a small koha (between $10 - $20 max) on Day One for the marae as part of the pōwhiri process.
Those intending to travel on the Wednesday are to organise own accommodation and food.

- Wānanga Tuatahi - 11 and 12 March 2021
- Wānanga Tuarua - 8 and 9 April 2021
- Wānanga Tuatoru - 6 and 7 May 2021
- Wānanga Tuawhā - 10 and 11 June 2021
Please note:
There will only be 20 places available for people committed to completing the programme.
This programme follows an action learning approach and is NOT on the NZQA framework.
All wānanga will be held on a Thursday and Friday requiring overnight stay.
All wānanga will be held in Waikato at Ngā Hau e Whā Marae - Cambridge Community Marae, 3 Bracken St, Leamington, Cambridge.
